British subcontracting orders were also awarded to F.W. Berwick, Glendower Aircraft, Palladium Autocars Ltd and Vulcan Motor & Engineering, and Westland Aircraft Works. It was also proposed to set up a factory in Russia to build the Airco DH4, although the Russian Revolution of October 1917 scrapped those plans.
Several Airco DH4s were used for experimental flights, such as engine test work, both in the UK and the US. After the war, a single-seat racing type with swept-back wings (Airco DH4R) won the 1919 Aerial Derby.
The Airco DH4 has been deployed in a variety of roles, including a variety of crop dusting, ambulance and target adaptations, along with numerous training and commercial developments.
After the war, the type and its manufacturers played a particularly important role in launching commercial passenger and airmail services in Britain and Australia, as well as for the US Postal Service. Most mail planes in the United States are single-seat, with mail stored in a watertight compartment that sits at the front of the plane.
