But there's no evidence Smith actually told tourists to "lower your standards," and Smith formally denied saying that at a congressional hearing on Wednesday.

"Frankly, as you probably know, social media is outraged by statements that I didn't make," Smith told lawmakers at a House Appropriations subcommittee hearing.
The Navy Times obtained Smith's full phone transcript last month, and the Navy released the conversation.
According to the records, Smith never said the phrase "your standards are low" during the incident. But the allegations persisted as Redditors and Facebook pages denounced Smith's entire staff as tone-deaf and insensitive.
Since August 2017, the GW crew has been living at the ship's conversion construction area in Newport News, Virginia, where refueling and complex repair work began. This process is expected to extend the service life of the carrier by another 25 years.

Smith visited the carrier following the suicides of three junior GW crew members last month and the deaths of several others last year.

At an all-hands meeting in April, Smith told the beleaguered crew that he heard their concerns and should raise them, but that they should do so with reasonable expectations.
"You don't sleep in a foxhole like a sailor," he said, adding that most crew members go home every night, which is what designated carriers do.
During Wednesday's hearing, Smith said he was "carefully prioritizing the way we make service decisions" and that sailors needed somewhere to escape the stressful environment on board.
