glock 43x extended mag

Glock 43x Extended Mag - Tyrant Designs is a manufacturer of high quality US Made CNC machined AR-15 and pistol modifications and accessories. They recently sent me a pair of Glock 43X and 48 +4 magazine extensions. When it comes to magazine extensions, the deciding factor in whether or not to get a quality extension often depends on how well your rifle performs. Beyond that measurement, we'll look at how it changes the carrying experience compared to a standard capacity mag.

My first impression of the magazine extension can be summed up in one word: authenticity. As a former machinist, I can see the high quality CNC machining applied to this part. The magazine extension looks like it has a lot of rough, angular edges, but it's sculpted at a comfortable angle to prevent any creaking or scraping when gripped or handled.

The anodization is done very well and resists normal wear and scratches, but it comes off with enough effort. It's not invincible by any means, but it's good enough that it won't go over the top with normal use.

Small Mag Base For The Glock 43x And Glock 48

On the outside, I give it a solid 9/10. It looks great paired with the original two-tone finish of the Glock 43X and Glock 48 that they both own. The magazine sits flush with the width of the grip and only extends downward, contributing to the overall height of the rifle in this configuration. I expect it to look a little weird with the other colors, but with the black and silver Tyrant the gun looks great.

This is the saddest part of an acceptable magazine extension for Glock pistols. For most pistol magazines, simply press the button on the bottom of the magazine and slide the base plate off. Glock magazines have two small retention tabs on the right and left sides of the magazine body. This tab extends to the base plate, which you must press in addition to the button below to push the spring base up.

There are tools to do this, but I used a pair of channel locks to install the sides. Even with the channel locks, it took considerable force to overcome some lock tab engagement to remove the original base plate.

After removing the original baseboard, it is very easy to install the Tirant designs extensions. Simply move the follower from the original spring to the extension spring, insert the spring and follower and cover it with the magazine extension.

The tyrant made it easy to loosen with a small knob on the back of the extension that can be pressed against an empty container or other solid object. No channel lock required.

An extension of the magazine acts as an advertisement. I had a little trouble loading this up to round 14. It's not a problem with a little practice, but the last round definitely puts a lot of pressure to get in there. Magazines can be inserted with the slides closed even with overpressure, but the magazines will not fall freely at full capacity.

I did some testing to make sure the magazine would work with the normal operation of the rifle. Fully loaded magazines are difficult to load and do not fall free. However, even with the magazine loaded to 12 rounds, it still appears to be able to fall freely from the rifle. If you use more rounds than that, the magazine tends to get stuck in the magazine. With the extra spring pressure bulge near the bottom of the OEM Glock magazine, this appears to be a Glock magazine problem.

When loaded to full capacity, the sides of the magazine pop up, allowing the magazine to be stored inside the rifle. This might be a problem for some people, but for me it seems like a minor problem since I haven't seen it drop a full mag. When used normally, the spring fed the rifle properly and provided enough pressure to relock the slide on the last round. When the magazine was empty, the magazine fell freely as usual. Due to the extra weight of the extension, it can be a bit faster than the stock magazine.

One thing I noticed is that having an extension on the rifle prevents your palm from getting stuck between the magwell and the magazine base plate during reloading. In general, I found the magazine easy to work with the attached extensions.

The biggest downside to magazine expansion is in the stealth department. Loading into the Glock 48 increases the overall height of the gun by about two inches. The height of the gun is the most difficult part to hide with the natural oval shape of your waist. It creates a very interesting print that is uncomfortable if hidden under my casual shirt.

Recently TFBTV's James Reeves presented a scientific evaluation of the effectiveness of concealed carry handguns. The efficiency score works as follows.

It is calculated as the product of rounds per square inch and rounds per ounce. This does not indicate the total length of the pistol, but how effective it is. Light guns with thin, short frames and high capacity work well here. Higher scores are better.

Give Your Glock An Edge With Tyrant Designs Steel Extended Magazine Release

The Glock 48 typically has an efficiency rating of 0.79 with a magazine capacity of 10 rounds. Using the extension of the magazine reduces the efficiency score to 0.76, which is not much. This puts the Glock 48 on par with guns like the SIG Sauer P228, Glock 26 Gen 3, and SIG Sauer P320 compact. The main reason for the decrease in results is the increased height.

On the subject, I think if I were to carry this mag extender I would carry it in my pocket or mag holster. The reason for this is that it reduces the negative effect on the concealability of the gun. Of course, you can break this point of effectiveness by adding a large magazine extension, but that ultimately defeats the purpose of a concealed carry pistol. Basically you are fooling the system.

We think the Tyrant Designs +4 Magazine Extender is a great addition to your Glock 43X or Glock 48 for everyday shooting or a backup magazine extension. They don't add much weight and offer a little extra grip for those with exceptionally large hands.

I don't carry these as part of an EDC kit, but I do take them to the range with me and pack them at home. The method I use to carry is not suitable for holding a larger case than the Glock 48 already holds. Having extra, large capacity magazines is always a good idea and I think keeping magazines around the house or as extra magazines in the car or on people is the best way to carry magazines.
