Navy officials are moving more than 350 service members out of barracks that have been without hot water for years at Naval Support Activity Bethesda, the Maryland base that is home to Walter Reed National Military Medical Center.

The movement of young troops living in the Comfort and Sanctuary facilities began Saturday and followed a Navy Times investigation Friday that revealed how some junior sailors and soldiers lived for years without hot water and other basic amenities in those buildings.

"I already work very long hours in a high-demand clinic with a huge volume of patients," one affected Navy SEAL told Navy Times last week. "For a long time we have no staff and there is no remote work for us. It's silly to have to grit your teeth through a cold shower and go back to grinding."

The affected soldiers were moved to the Navy Quarters and a nearby hotel off base and will remain there "until the hot water issues are resolved," base spokesman Jeremy Brooks said in an email.

Counter adm. Michael Steffen, the commanding officer of the Naval District of Washington, made a "surprise visit" to Sanctuary Hall on Saturday to hear the concerns of residents there.

In a statement announcing the movement of affected troops from the barracks without hot water, the Navy said "the project has been approved.
